I visited all 50 states as a kid, with my parents and sisters. We did long car trips every summer, with our station wagon, camper and tent for the kids, visiting all the National Parks, historical markers and other sites that interested Dad. I get my love of our beautiful national parks and history from my Dad. As an adult, after spending time in South Carolina, Alabama and Texas in the US Army I then was stationed in West Germany. I saw most of western Europe while there for almost 3 years. Divorced with one child, I wanted to show my daughter the same amazing sites I got to see. We didn't visit all 50 states together but did visit 36 or so, as well as 50+ countries and all 7 continents together. Now that I have all the time in the world, I have a long list of places on my bucket list. I'll be traveling solo, just me and my dog named Boo. A 11-year-old rescue dog I adopted last year, he's a great companion and loves car trips.

I stayed in Charlottesville about 18 months ago when visiting Shenandoah National Park. I did make a short, too short, visit to Monticello. I booked the house tour but left it to the end of the day, without time for visiting the grounds, the other buildings or exhibits. I tried visiting Harpers Ferry NHP about 18 months ago, on the way from Gettysburg to Shenandoah but, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in the fall, it was crazy busy. There was no parking in the small historic town, even the overflow parking lot two miles up the road was full, so I kept driving. The NPS manages all the battlefields in the area, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Chancellorsville, and the Wilderness. It also manages several historic buildings, including Chatham Manor. The battles in the area were over a period of about 18 months, starting with the first battle of Fredericksburg in December, 1862, between Burnside and Lee. Chancellorsville was April and May, 1963. I had a small AirBNB in a great location, by the Eastern Market in Capital Hill. I spent two weeks in the upper peninsula. My first week I was in the Keweenaw Peninsula, the upper upper peninsula, on Lake Superior. I drove further east to Goetzville on Lake Huron for the second week. I didn’t research either place much, just found some affordable, nice looking AirBNBs after leaving Door County.
