Peru

Peru

Machu Picchu! Who doesn’t want to see the amazing history of Peru and incredible Incan ruins? We booked this trip with Go-Today. I’ve used them for a number of trips since the early 2000’s. They were consolidators and many of their trips initially were just airfare and hotels, sometimes with airport transportation. You could customize by level of hotel or add days. I had used them for a week in London, and a week in London and Paris with Eurorail…

Madrid and Barcelona

Madrid and Barcelona

Alex and I spent a week in Spain in March 2008, over her college spring break. We spent 4 nights in Madrid and 3 in Barcelona. Our trip was booked with Go-Today and included flights, hotels, and the train between the cities. Alex’s college room-mate, Kim, was studying in Barcelona for the term and came to Madrid to see the city and spend some time with us. She showed us around Barcelona, also. She really helped us out with her knowledge…

Warsaw and Krakow

Warsaw and Krakow

After our first trip together to Oktoberfest, Kelly and I decide we enjoyed traveling together and booked Budapest, Vienna, and Prague through Go-Today. We loved that trip and all three cities. Austria uses the Euro but Hungary and Czechia don’t. We talked about visiting non-euro countries again because of the better exchange rates. We both wanted to visit Poland and Go-Today had a Warsaw-Krakow trip that included city tours, airport transfers, and the train between cities. Looking at their site recently,…

Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic

Alex and I wanted to get away somewhere warm on her winter break from college, so I booked an Apple Vacations at a local travel agent, Suzy Davis Travel. I think it might be the first time I used a actual travel agent! We had a “six apple” (rated) resort, a special deal but you don’t know which one until you arrive at the airport. We saved quite a bit of money this way. We flew out on December 9th…

Budapest, Vienna, and Prague

Budapest, Vienna, and Prague

Kelly and I enjoyed our week in Munich in 2005. We liked traveling together and found out we are both history nerds. It helps we both like to try to new things, eat different foods, too. We decided to return to Europe using Go-Today again. Their website currently offers a Budapest-Vienna-Prague tour, but when we booked it was Budapest-Prague and we added 2 nights in Vienna. I love Europe in the fall. September and October have perfect weather. Families with kids…

Australia, New Zealand, and French Polynesia

Australia, New Zealand, and French Polynesia

Alex was attending a college that was on trimesters so had a very long winter break. I booked a 22 day trip to Australia and New Zealand using Friendly Planet her freshman year over her holiday. Sydney Day 1 – December 5th – We had a flight to Sydney, via Tahiti. We only had about 70 people on the plane, so after takeoff and dinner, I went to the back, got four seats and stretched out. We arrived in Sydney around…

Munich, Oktoberfest

Munich, Oktoberfest

I attended Oktoberfest in 1989 when I was living in West Germany. I mentioned it at work once, talking about the big tents, the music, the crowds, and how much fun it was. My friend and colleague, Kelly, said she’d love to go sometime and would I want to go back? I said, well, when my daughter goes off to college I could go. I’d rather leave an 8-year-old home alone than an 18-year-old. I wouldn’t, of course, but my 8-year-old…

Portugal

Portugal

Alex and I booked a week in Lisbon, Portugal in November, 2004, over Thanksgiving break of her senior year in high school. We used Go-Today like we have many times, for their flights and hotels. Thinking about this trip throughout the years, I remember the beautiful Peña Palace and moorish ruins in Sintra, the tile museum, and Christmas decorations. Then I pulled up my scrapbook journaling to write this post and I am quite disappointed both by the amount of…

Toronto

Toronto

Alex and I spent a week in Toronto, we drove up from Illinois. We visited the Fort York Historical Site. We had a tour, there were plenty of soldiers dressed in period uniforms, also, to answer questions about the history and use of the fort. Americans attacked this fort during the War of 1812. The British occupied Washington, DC and set fire to the President’s House, Canadian legend says the Americans covered up the blackened soot covered walls with white…

Turkey and Greece

Turkey and Greece

Alex and I booked an Athens and Greek island cruise for the summer, right after school ended. I can’t remember the company name, though. We added a 3-night extension to Istanbul. We traveled with a good friend of hers, Shane, and his mom, Dee. We had an early flight from Chicago to New York so spent the night of June 4th close to O’Hare. We left June 5th at 0900 for New York. Our flights were odd, I don’t think…
